The Visiting Nurse Associations of America

December 16, 2011

With decades of experience as an attorney, south Florida author Mario Mozzillo holds affiliation with a number of professional organizations, notably serving on the Board of Directors of the Visiting Nurse Associations of America (VNAA). Supporting and advocating on behalf of visiting nurses and therapists, VNAA works towards the development of a nationwide network of nonprofit, community-based home hospice and health providers. Core to this mission is quality, cost-effective care for all patients in need, regardless of ability to pay or complexity of condition.

One of the most valuable aspects of the Visiting Nurse Associations of America is its role in organizing the nation’s largest network of nonprofit influenza vaccine centers, which collectively administer more than 1.5 million flu shots annually. The organization’s website at http://www.vnaa.org offers a convenient flu clinic finder, with local centers accessible by entering a zip code. Small businesses find VNAA-affiliated clinics a critical asset in providing affordable preventative care for their associates and employees.

Visiting Nurse Associations of America advocates continuously at the national level, supporting a number of public policy positions designed to strengthen America’s care system for people who are vulnerable. One key issue involves the establishment of a supplemental payment for home health providers of low-income patients with high needs. VNAA strives to ensure that public health care plans treat home health and hospice benefits as an essential benefit, and the nonprofit providers as essential community providers. Holding this status can be critical in enabling patients to access qualified home care under their insurance coverage.

In September 2011, 80 VNAA nonprofit home health and hospice members took direct action by meeting in Washington, D.C. The Public Policy Leadership Conference on Capitol Hill informed and educated lawmakers about steps they can take in protecting vulnerable patients through support of nonprofit home care delivery systems. Several congressional champions of VNAA’s approach were honored at the convention, representing both sides of the political aisle.
